The Importance of a Car Seat – Age 0 to 1

It feels wonderful to go out on a long drive with your baby. It gives the mother the freedom to drive around and claim back some of her life. Investing in a car seat is a great idea to take baby steps towards being on your feet. Instead of asking your partner or a family member to come along and hold the baby, installing safety seats lets you enjoy the drive fully. Independent seating also teaches a baby the first lesson of being independent. This also shields babies from injuries, sudden jerks or severe damages during accidents or a bumpy ride.

If you are a new parent looking to buy a car seat, here’s a list of things to keep in mind.

    • These seats must be selected as per the child’s age, weight and height.
    • The best way to position them would be in the center of the backseat or behind the passenger side.
    • As the child grows up, one must customize the seats accordingly
    • Till a child is 1-2 years old, make sure that the seats are backward facing or rear facing.

There are three main varieties of car seats, i.e., kid seats, convertible baby seats, and booster seats.

Let’s look at their properties so that you can get an idea of which seat would be best suited for your kid.

1. Kid Seats or Infants Seats

    • They can be used for a newborn baby till they turn 2.
    • Can be used for babies weighing up to 20-22 pounds / 9-10 kgs.
    • They are light weight and portable
    • These seats are mostly rear facing and come with safety harness of its own
    • It is preferred because the seat can be removed from the car without having to unstrap and waking up the baby. Since the car seat base remains attached to the car seat, the carrier simply removes the seat from the base when it is required
    • Infant seats can be fixed onto a stroller base as well.
    • Infants with special needs might not be able to sit in this type of seats and would require car beds or customized seats especially made for them

2.Convertible Baby

    • Recommended weight for a baby up to 30 pounds or 13.5 kilo gram
    • Can be used for newborns to 3-year-olds
    • These types of seats can be both forward facing or backward facing, but experts suggest that parents choose a seat that is rear facing or backward facing
    • It comes with its own safety belts and harnesses
    • They are not portable such as the infant seat. So, they remain attached to the base

3. Booster Seats

    • Once your child outgrows the convertible seat, you can upgrade to a booster seat. Unlike the Infant and Convertible models, this specific seat does not have a seat belt/harness of its own.
    • Recommended for a child between the age group 4-8

Once you’ve brought the car seat

    • Buckle in your baby with care before a ride. For newborns and babies use the lowest harness slots
    • Avoid strapping your baby too tightly, this might make them uncomfortable and cranky. Make sure that the straps are below the baby’s shoulder to avoid strain
    • Make sure the straps are properly fixed between the baby’s legs and shoulder and they are safely tucked in
    • To make the baby more comfortable tuck him/her in with a few rolled up blankets and small baby pillows. But make sure that the padding is not too thick, either behind or underneath the baby

The need to protect your baby, makes you adopt necessary measures to ensure the best for your child. Most of them are instinctive. It is said that parents and babies grow up together. We have tried to list down our learnings vetted by other parents and institutions. And one of them is to buy and install a safety seat in the car for your newborn baby. A few hospitals across the world insist that newborns are taken home in securely installed car seats appropriate for the age group so that unknowingly they do not get injured.

So, what are YOU waiting for? Fix that seat and get rolling for a long relaxing drive!
