Coping with Fatherhood in the Initial Phase

A good baby care is essential for your baby’s growth and development. A massage forms an important part of your regular baby care routine. A good massage is known to emotionally secure and improve your baby’s overall health. However, it is important that you have some essential information. We have listed a few pointers which can act as a guideline for preparation before the message.

Preparation before Massage

  • Create the right ambience-A comfortable quiet room or with soft music in the background creates a relaxed setting before the massage.
  • Light-Exposure to natural light is always advisable during massage.
  • Diapers-Massaging with or without diapers is entirely your discretion. However, if you massage without diapers then you can massage every part of the body.
  • Soothe your baby-Talk softly or sing to your baby. Your voice will always work like magic in comforting your baby

Your baby is delicate. It is important to massage your baby gently without putting too much pressure. Below listed are a few techniques to help you with your baby massage.

  • Prepare your baby. Your baby needs to be ready for the massage. If not, then there is a chance that your baby can get irritable. The easiest way is taking some baby oil in your palms and gently rub on baby’s tummy or behind the ears. If you see your baby visibly relaxing continue with the massage
  • Leg massage-Rub some oil in your palms and start massaging the soles of the feet.
  • Make circular movements with your thumb on the foot and the ankle. Massage every toe without pulling them.
  • Give gentle massage with upward strokes from the foot to the thigh.

Hand and Arms Massage

  • Start with circular movements on the palm
  • Gently massage the back of the hand towards the wrist
  • Massage the entire arm with gentle circular strokes.

Tummy Massage

  • Massage the tummy gently with circular clockwise strokes
  • Be careful not to put pressure and avoid the naval area if baby’s cord has not healed.
  • For face and back, stroke from the middle of the baby’s forehead down the outside of the baby’s face and then towards the baby’s cheeks.
  • If baby is relaxed then you can turn your baby on the tummy and give smooth gentle strokes from head to toe.

Things not to do

  • Do not massage when baby is hungry or there is any discomfort or cranky
  • Do not massage when baby is ill
  • Do not continue the massage if your baby starts crying.

Remember massages are a beautiful way of communicating with your baby. This is another step for your baby to recognise your touch. Your touch will alleviate your baby’s stress and create a strong sense of emotional wellbeing. It is very important that you are relaxed while giving the massage. A baby picks up every vibe of the parent and a massage by a stressed parent can make a baby disturbed and cranky. It is therefore extremely important to remember the basic mantra of baby massage. “You need to enjoy giving the massage as much as your baby is enjoys getting it”
